000 a year with Adelaide Lightning
He's angry that since he bought the team in July, 2006 for $113,000 in the government's firesale of basketball's assets, venue hire charges at Brett Maher Court and even Wayville this past season have been exorbitant.
"Where our attendance is no more than 400, we lose money playing at home," the Whyallabased engineer and businessman said.
He's fuming basketball in this state does not support its national league team in any tangible way. To play at the BMC would have cost $5500 per match this past season.
And he's mad at how his daughter Angela, cocaptain and MVP of the Lightning and a dualNew Zealand Olympian, is portrayed.
"If South Australia doesn't want the Marino family to own the Lightning, that's one thing," he said. "But leave Angela in peace and attack me if someone has the guts."
Marino is fired up over a weekend report which claimed his daughter received "preferential treatment" with Lightning since she joined the team from Perth for the 200708 season, nike free dame.
That led to coach Chris Lucas, with whom Marino had no issue during 200607, being fired two games into the season. But Marino insists he does not influence daytoday running of his team.
"I have a meeting with the coach at the start of the season and that's all," he said.
Townsville Fire's coach of the past four seasons, Peter Buckle, will bring his particular brand of intensity and commitment to the program for the next three years.
Clearly, and contrary to rumours, Marino has no intention to sell the Lightning in the immediate future.
"Peter has been on our radar for a long time," Marino said.
"We believe he will bring a new face and will change Adelaide. He will coach fulltime and my expectation is to win and restore the club where it deserves."
Recruiting will be an issue though because of perpetuated perceptions of Marino's daughter Angela as a difficult teammate. Her occassionally petulant body language and oncourt attitude often leave a lot to be desired.
"Angela could use some mentoring in that area," former Lightning coach and Opals gold medal world champion coach Jan Stirling said.
"I believe we can make positive changes if we choose to want to work on our attitude. I believe she needs someone to mentor her on her attitude and leadership."
It's an issue and needs to be addressed but demonising the family in the process may be overkill. Adelaide just as easily could no longer have a WNBL presence.
"I've always been a fan of basketball and am trying to keep this glorious team alive for all the young country and city girls of SA," Vince said.
Marino admits he has made mistakes, the journey has been bumpy and expensive.
He has battled lifethreatening illness in the process, which naturally has added to the daily stress of owning an unprofitable sporting team.
"My health has turned for the better and I have more time left to live," Marino said.
But he doesn't expect the next few years to be easy.
"People never respect a private owner," he said.
"There is a certain amount of jealousy and it is easy to talk and criticise when you are not actually putting your hand in your pocket."
Angela has not sought a local team to play for in the offseason she has been released by Sturt following the appointment of Lucas as its coach but is currently in the US working out with players hoping to attract WNBA interest next month.
