Sales negotiations between the creditor banks of the insolvent Daewoo Motor and General Motors (GM) are expected to resume next week.
"We are reviewing the results of the first round of negotiations with GM over the sale of Daewoo Motor held in Hong Kong earlier last week. We expect to resume the negotiations once again next week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said an official of the creditor banks Tuesday.
Although the proposal made by GM remains undisclosed, it is reported that it does not deviate much from their original stated intention to buy only the profitable parts of the insolvent automaker.
The biggest issue at hand regarding the sales negotiation is whether GM will buy Daewoo's Bupyeong plant. Currently,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Daewoo's Bupyeong,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Gunsan, and Changwon plants, Daewoo Car sales and distribution,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Daewoo Capital, Daewoo Telecom, Boryung Plant, Poland FSO plant and 12 overseas production facilities and 25 distribution subsidiaries have been put up for sale by the creditor banks.
GM, however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], had said earlier that the company will buy only those plants and subsidiaries which it deems profitable. Moreover,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], despite efforts by the government and creditor banks to include the Bupyeong plant in the buy list,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], GM has said it will not buy the plant,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], due to its outdated facilities and militant union.
It is reported that the government may have to lower the sales price of Daewoo Motor or give tax benefits to convince GM to buy the plant.
GM is expected to come up with an estimated figure for the purpose of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) first and determine the price once the company completes an asset evaluation.
It is reported that GM is likely to offer between US$2 billion to US$3 billion for Daewoo Motors,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Apart form the price and the fate of Bupyeong plant,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it is reported that the credit banks will discuss the transfer of employees, sale of overseas subsidiaries and creditor banks' debt-to-equity swap ratio. Another issue are the tax benefits for the new company to be set up by GM after the sales.
